Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is an evidenced-based form of therapy. Research has shown that CBT is an effective treatment for a wide range of problems. In particular, CBT has been shown to be effective in the management of anxiety and depression, and is as (if not more) effective as treatment with medication alone. Research also shows that people experiencing anxiety and depression are less likely to relapse when treated with CBT: They tend to get better and stay better.

CBT increases our understanding of how our thoughts affect our feelings and our behaviours. CBT teaches us how to recognize and challenge unhelpful thoughts and replace them with more helpful or realistic thoughts which can lead to an improvement in mood. Some of the skills taught in CBT involve identifying distorted thinking, modifying beliefs, relating to others in different ways, and changing behaviors. Skills such as relaxation exercises and breathing exercises are also taught.
